A recent study replicated these findings using wakefulness MEG and EEG recordings. Muñoz-Yunta and colleagues [245] identified subclinical epileptiform activity in 86% of children with PDD, which was evident predominantly in the perisylvian regions, especially for ASD children. An earlier case study by Paetau and colleagues [246] suggested that unilateral discharges at or near the auditory cortex disrupts auditory discrimination in the affected hemisphere and leads to suppression of auditory information from the opposite hemisphere, thereby resulting in verbal auditory agnosia.

According to Papanicolaou and colleagues [229], the MEG alternative to Wada procedures for determining the language dominant hemisphere was in complete agreement in 74 out of 85 cases (87%) with 11 discordant cases. But in the majority (7) of the discordant cases, MEG detected considerable activity in both hemispheres when the Wada suggested left-hemisphere language dominance. Maestú and colleagues [232] similarly found good agreement in 7 out of 8 patients. MEG results for the 8th patient suggested right-hemisphere dominance when the Wada procedure did not show clear hemispheric specialization for language.

The patient group showed significantly reduced tinnitus loudness. C. Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is included here since most of the studies, and most certainly the early studies, examined the functional organization of auditory cortex in schizophrenia patients. The earliest study by Reite and colleagues [49], examined the M100 response in schizophrenia patients. MEG activity was recorded from ~35 locations from each hemisphere while 1 kHz tone pips, at 90 dB sound pressure level, were delivered at the contralateral ear.
