His new owner was an officer in the Confederate army, and young Frank finished out the war in the officer's service, returning to his mother with the end of the war and the coming of freedom. 38 The fall of Charleston was the beginning of a time of excitement and change for the Grimké family. Archie and Frank entered into the excitement with a spirit of adventure. Almost as soon as the city fell, they, along with cousins Arthur O'Hear and Francis Weston, offered themselves as officers' boys to the Union soldiers and were immediately taken on.

In his mid-thirties, when Archie gave a lecture based loosely on her life entitled, tellingly, "A Madonna of the South," it was this characteristic that he emphasized about her. An extremely religious woman, she trained her sons to stay away from tobacco, alcohol, and profanity, and she inculcated in them a background of piety that was to remain with Archibald and Francis, at least, all of their lives. 16 Nancy could provide such an influence because she was always willing to stand up for her children, just as she had always stood up for herself.

The students were housed in a barrackslike dormitory sleeping twenty to a room. Because of their obvious ability, Archie and Frank were soon singled out for special attention. Both did remarkably well in their courses, although Archie was weak in chemistry, finishing first or second in their class every term. "7 The four years at Lincoln were active ones for both boys in ways that went beyond their formal studies. Although Archie always made much of the strong religious background his mother had provided him, it was, according to his brother, while at Lincoln that he made his public profession of faith.
